Barbara Michalchuk served the Memphis Shelby County Schools system for 20 years in roles ranging from clerical support to para-educator tutoring and staff training in information systems. At CSL she supports the director of the CSL Literacy Initiative, a collaboration with school districts in the rural Mississippi Delta region designed to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively deploy the science of reading in the classroom.

In her previous work with the Memphis Shelby County Schools’ 46-school Division of Optional Schools and Advanced Academics Barbara worked closely with school personnel to ensure that online and walk-in applicants met the requirements for the school of their choice. She also provided group, individual, and virtual training and support to school and district personnel in the use of the Student Information System for Optional Schools.

Demonstrating an early aptitude for business operations, while still in high school Barbara was active in the Distributive Education Clubs of America, maintaining inventory and processing counter, mail, and phone orders for a wholesale business. Her subsequent work experience included retail sales, bookkeeping, and secretarial services for Memphis-area businesses and faith institutions.

Barbara was involved and served on elementary, middle school and high school PTA boards, as well as band and football boosters. She is active in her church and community, volunteering at a women’s shelter and her former employers.
